From the mailbox: Indian Call Center Workers Suffer Racial Abuse

nov 23

the incoherent rage of the unwashed yankee. some of them feel *entitled* to their jobs. what is happening with BPO is that moderately smart, moderately educated white people are losing their jobs to smarter, better educated, younger foreigners. welcome to globalization, boys and girls! after all, america has been the biggest champion of trade liberalization. that is, when it suits them. otherwise they want not 'free trade', but 'fair trade', a nice euphemism for 'non-tariff barriers'.

just normal hypocrisy.

When it comes to 'fair' trade, America does not even spare Canada. There is a softwood lumber dispute going on between USA and Canada. Briefly put, Canada can sell softwood lot cheaper than USA and the American softwood industry does not like it. Under the pretext of dumping, they have levied duties, which today totals around $5billion. Canada won the case in the NAFTA court and yesterday some Washington court also ruled it in favour of Canada. Yet the americans continue to charge duties on Canadian softwood.

We will all see what will happen to USA when ALQaeda does manage to have a few nuclear diwali in near future. Pride goes before a fall.

Well, I'd say that any customer service or retail job, where you're dealing with the 'great unwashed masses' is going to make you a punching bag for the moodiness or frustrations of the average jerk off the street.

Even leaving aside the racial abuse, I would say that average store clerk has to deal with a lot of pettiness and haughty behavior that people generally feel entitled to inflict on service sector workers.

And this will always be the case. It's the nature of the job. One can rail against society, etc, about it, but the best course of action is not to work in that sector if you can't stand that kind of behavior.

I remember once standing in the checkout line at a store, and an elderly Indo-Guyanese walked in, asking a female clerk to be able to exchange a defective item. As the aisle stocking that item was only several feet away, and as the girl was busy dealing with me, she told him could take a fresh item from the shelf. Instead of doing this, he stood there transfixed, screwing his face into ever greater convulsions: "You want ME to go get it? How dare you -- why don't YOU go get it?" He kept repeating and repeating himself over and over, turning ever deeper shades of purple, with his ever wider eyes popping out of his head.

I felt like giving the old coot a smack to the back of the head. He was holding up the line for at least 3 minutes.

Hey, Google seems to be testing some new Click-to-Call feature as part of their search engine:

http://www.google.com/help/faq_clicktocall.html

Basically, if you to a Google search and see a phone icon by the search results, you can click on it, and it will connect you to a telephone number. Interesting way for businesses to solicit customer calls.

I checked my dress materials a few days back (all these were bought in Philadelphia).

2 pairs of Levi's - one from Pakistan and one from Bangladesh
a pair of adidas - from Philippines
2 Arrow shirts - both from Bangladesh
a CK shirt - from Philippines

Why arent the Americans not worried about this?

LOL. Strange people. the indian share of 2% of world IT business has them in knots. not the cheap imports from China/paki lands flooding their markets.

Well, even we abuse call center guys in India, when our mobile phone bills are inflated, credit card bills are inflated, phone does not work, blah blah. but the abuse is not racist.

Rajeev, I do agree, free trade turns into fair trade whenever it suits the americans. hypocrisy. as in the nuke deal too.
