Trucking goods from inland factories to the ports of Shenzhen or Shanghai on the coast and then sending the goods by ship around India and through the Suez Canal takes five weeks. The Silk Road train cuts the shipping time from western China to retail distribution centers in western Europe to three weeks. The sea route is still about 25 percent cheaper than sending goods by train, but the cost of the added time by sea is considerable.

The EU's anti-dumping duties on Chinese solar panels is the largest trade case the Commission has undertaken, with around 21 billion euros of China-made solar panels sold in the EU. The two Italian marines, now on bail in the case relating to killing of two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast on February 15 this year, on Friday filed a petition in the high court seeking relaxation of bail conditions to enable them visit their homes in Italy for Christmas.

I'm unable to authenticate if the document is really genuine, however it's very disheartening and stunning to see that such a studiously observant and articulate fellow has turned out to be a cold-blooded killer with no regard for the law. To use his own language, he decided to "target the category A and B traitors" in his country and proceeded with deadly precision.

Breivik obviously carried out the bombing against the govt building as a diversionary attack to lure the police to downtown Oslo, so that meanwhile he would be able to massacre the children of the ruling politicians on Utoya island free from police interference. He even used frangible 'dum-dum' bullets to maximize the carnage. It looks as if he pre-meditatively planned everything in meticulous detail, plotting years in advance and obtaining farming and mining permits so that he could acquire explosives and other sensitive deadly materials without suspicion.

It now also seems that Breivik has committed all this mayhem in order to gain himself a public trial and media circus which he can then use as a platform from which to argue his viewpoint and make his case to the world. His goal is to rally the world against Islamization.

Norwegian Bombs Oslo, Shoots 80 Teens

Norway has been hit by twin attacks, with a bomb detonating in front of the Prime Minister's office in downtown Oslo, and a gunman disguised in a police uniform shooting to death 80 teenaged kids during a gathering by the left-wing ruling party on the Norwegian island of Utoya.

NEW DELHI: Civil rights activist Binayak Sen, recently freed on bail by the Supreme Court in a sedition case, has been honoured with the 2011 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, South Korea's most prestigious award for those working on peace, democracy and justice in Asia.

The award was announced yesterday by 2011 Gwangju Prize Committee in Seoul.

The prize, which carries a sum of USD 50,000 is awarded each year on May 18 -- on the anniversary of the May 1980 Gwangju democratic uprising -- to a person or organisation who has made significant contributions in the field of human rights and democracy.

"Dr Sen, as an accomplished medical practitioner has distinguished himself by his devotion to providing health services for the poor and by his strong advocacy against human rights violations and structural violence inflicted on the poor," the award jury said in a statement on the website of May 18 Memorial Foundation.

"He has also been active in the People's Union for Civil Liberties documenting human rights violations occurring during the anti-Naxalite conflict," it said.

The jury this year received 32 nominations from countries all around Asia. Xanana Gusmao, the leader of the East Timore struggle for independence was the first awardee of the Gwangju Prize when it was launched in 2000, while Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi won it in 2004. Irom Sharmila, the Manipuri human rights activist, is the previous Indian winner of the Gwangju Prize.
