NEW DELHI: China wants India to put behind the 1962 war as an "unfortunate" thing of the past and that the two countries should strengthen their military ties including formalising a border management pact under which their troops will not fire at each other.

The Chinese assessment was conveyed to the Indian defence ministry team which visited Beijing on January 14 and 15 for the third round of the annual defence dialogue between the two countries.

During the meeting with the Indian team led by defence secretary Shashikant Sharma, the Chinese side asked India to forget the 1962 war as an "unfortunate" thing of the past and said it looked forward towards better relations between the two countries, highly-placed defence sources said here today. India suffered a humiliating defeat in the 1962 war.

The Chinese side was "unusually warm" during the third round of talks and wanted a formal border management agreement along the more than 4,000-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The Chinese side, the sources said, is expected to soon send proposals in this regard which would also suggest the two sides to agree on their troops not firing at each other under any circumstances.

May Surprise: Osama Confirmed Killed

No, apparently it's not an April Fool's joke. Today on May 1st, 2011, the US conducted an raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan. After obtaining DNA confirmation, the announcement has just been made by US President Obama:



So Bin Laden has not lived to celebrate a 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. At least the Americans finally got their key enemy, even if there are plenty of others who can fill his place.

I suspect that the growing desperation of Pakistan over the War on Terror contributed to this raid. MEMRI Predicts US-Pak Clash

The Washington-based Middle Eastern Media Research Institute (MEMRI) predicts that Pakistan and the United States are on a collision course for war. This is because of the fundamental clash between their interests, and the inability of either side to back down on what each considers to be its vital interests.

US Threatens Cross-Border Ground Offensives at Pak

US media outlets, led by the NYT, have leaked alleged plans by the US govt to launch ground offensives across the border into Northern Pakistan. Predictably, this has triggered much anger and consternation in Pakistani circles.

But are these sudden rumors of a new shift towards ground raids based on reality? My personal impression is that these rumors are being deliberately floated by US officials in response to Pakistan's recent outing of the CIA station chief in Islamabad over the drone strikes.

My feeling is that the US is using its media to deliberately issue such "leaks" as a way to send warning signals to Pak, and apply pressure on it. The US is telling Pakistan that if it endangers the drone strike program, then this will force the US to consider options that will be much more unpleasant for Pak, like ground offensives. In other words - accept the drone strikes or else.

Presumably, the US wishes to preserve drone strikes as its preferred strategy, because it views this as the least risky way to go after the terrorists, since it doesn't require putting any troops in harm's way.
