forbes: Sun and Google: Publicity Ploy or Power Grab?

oct 6th

as i have been suggesting, google is looking to push web services to make the desktop redundant. microsoft obviously doesn't want this to happen.

I deleted my last post by mistake, so here it is again. I think AJAX shows a lot of promise in delivering what Google is trying to do: by pass the OS completely. There already is a web-based word processor, spreadsheet, calendaring program and even a trial OS! The next few years will be very interesting in how Microsoft will try to compete with Google.

Microsoft will have to
a) Offer similar services
b) Reduce prices of desktop products

Avinash , you said,

I do not think it is possible for google to bypass the operating system, fine you have a word processor, a spreadsheet , etc as webservices, but how do you access them without an operating system. You need a program on your local machine to call the webservice. A browser. Another program maybe. A wordprocessor, or a spreadsheet or any feature laden software, is heavy on execution time. See how programs work on your local machine. Add the network time to this. How slow this will get, even if you have a 2Mbps line. (Your operating system on the local machine communicates with the hard disk at 40 Mbps approx (for a ATA66 drive). You need to save your files on a local disk. You need something to manage the memory of your machine. All this means a lot of processes running.

All right lets say speed is not important. But how overloaded the server processing your webservice requests will be, if you request even basic operations like file saving to an OS on the web.

Satish, AJAX just like its ancestor Java, the idea would be to implement some cross-platform architecture which would be universally interoperable, and not restricted to the MS-Windows limitations and controls. AJAX would still interact with the local file system and wouldn't merely work as a thin client fetching from a remote server.

I do not know much about AJAX, but will it replace the operating system altogether. Is it going to interact with the local file system directly, without the operating system and drivers handling the system calls. If so, it might turn out that MS would have reduced clout (and money :)). The only limitation would be the cost of bandwidth. Dont you think it will be irritatingly slow.
If it is not going to be a thin client, then it breaks the client server model, doesnt it.
Meanwhile , I will try to read more about it. But I doubt if anyone can kill MS soon. The closest chance anything had was GNU/Linux. But with Redhat, Novell and Mandrake selling Linux, it is no longer free. You have to rely on Debian, which being free, is still to catch up with Redhat and Suse(novell), and isnt that user friendly. Fedora from redhat is free , but it is experimental, and redhat says it might have bugs. It is just like an untested build released for public use. A beta version. Later all the public code (gnu code, kernel code) is sold by Redhat, without complete media support(no mp 3 player). Not much different from MS, I would say :). Atleast MS does some of its code, copies some, and takes the major code from the previous version of its software.

The worst part is more than 50 Linux distros out there. Each one has its own quirks. They dont behave in an identical manner. Each one has many different features. And bugs. I wonder how easy it is for a program written for Suse 9 to work on Fedora 4.

I sure would like to see a strong competitor to MS, but webservices and 50 linux distros is not the way.

Anyway, Can you suggest a good, stable and free linux distro with mp 3 support. I am going to buy a PC in some time, and I would prefer an assembled rig with Linux over a branded one with Win preinstalled.

Regarding Mitrokhin, I am really amazed to see no papers talking about it. They themselves were in the pay of Marxists. I hope doctors go on a left sponsored strike when some commie leader is ill. (Karat and Yechuri are the first choice).
