slight personal digression:
i enjoyed 'rumpole of the bailey' on PBS, and i have read a couple of those books too. apparently mortimer, the author, was a pretty good lawyer and defender of free speech himself. i liked the rumpled rumpole character and his love of cheap plonk, as well as his fear of his wife, "She Who Must Be Obeyed". i remember him making facing at her while talking on the phone -- something he would never dare do in real life :-) i recommend the series. the actor leo mckern who played rumpole died a couple of years ago.
