Since India likes to project itself as a budding maritime power due to its long coastline, it may be useful for Indians to look at a recently released map of the most frequently traveled shipping routes. Apparently, this is something that's never really been looked at before. As you can see, there are some important routes that pass right under India's nose.

not exactly a new idea that arabian sea/indian ocean shipping has some of the world's highest densities. why, the darn suez canal was built specifically to make it easy to reach the indian ocean and cross it.
secondly 80% of the world's oil crosses the indian ocean, from the straits to hormuz to the straits of malacca.
this is exactly why a big container terminal at vizhinjam, trivandrum, one of the closest points to the shipping lanes, and also one of the deepest (72 feet), makes so much sense. of course, the comrades and tamil fundies have prevented this from happening.
Don't forget that key Indian trade routes also lie within the sphere of China's puppets, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
