in kerala, this is the first day of the month of makaram (capricorn) as well.
when i used to live in chennai, i was particularly entertained by mattu-pongal, the day the cattle are given pride of place. there were also jallikettus or tamil bull-fights.
and of course, this year there is a kumbha-mela in hardwar (not in prayag?). i am a little confused, is it an ardha-kumbha or a maha-kumbha? isn't it supposed to be in prayag?
and again, tomorrow there will be a spectacular annular solar eclipse, fully visible from tamil nadu and kerala.
eclipses are portents of grave things. god knows what's in store.
