reminds me of the old song 'video killed the radio star' :-)
the death of at&t startled me, but the baby bells seem to have survived. i guess the last mile is the key leverage point.
wonder what is the key leverage point in it services. if indian companies can figure this out, they can reign supreme. otherwise i'm afraid they are going to be blind-sided by other, nimble competitors, a little like sony has been sandbagged by samsung.

Hi Rajeev, Nice articles from the economist... and you are right VOIP will be the next big thing in future telephony, copanies trying to play idiotic monopolistic policies will bite the dust.
Its better that Indian companies come out of their protective and anti-competitive shells.
TRAI should focus on the customer and not on the pressure of the mobile/telephonic companies. (Like classifying TATA's Walky as WLL and not home phone and also restricting the use to home only etc.) The more companies offer to thr user the more they evolve. Let the best player (Playing with the rules ofcourse) survive. TRAI's job should be to see if any rules are being broken or not and also to see if any anti-consumer policies are being played. (Many companies sell users details and many dont commit on services and many have faulty billing service and their customer service is worse.... so authorities should see that such things are minimised. (Wouldnt we be happy if we stopped getting idiotic calls from airtel/tata/reliance or the third parties who buy our lists for selling us home-loans/credit cards and all the hell..... wouldnt we be happy if our bills are not conflicting and also if the customer response cell settles our queries faster instead of acting like government bureaucracies???) Wow... that would be great and if companies dont evolve... then they will die....
And another thing Rajeev...
In today's Times of India (The most hated newspaper of mine) the idiots published a cartoon by Ajit ninan (the bastard always draws idiotic cartoons, for many one has to scratch one's ass for getting a laugh, most of them are tasteless and some plain anti-national)
It showed 2 beggars talking about their Website network servers being down and a news paper showing 'India IT super power'.
His cartoons are always like the talk of a leftist/India- hater, maybe even a paki daily would be ashamed to publish such cheap cartoon. I felt like writing there, 'hey bastard, the whole world says India will be a IT super power, the two bhikaris pictured there, might be your Editor(TOI) and you (The cartoonist)to have not noticed it......
Anyway Rajeev, keep writing....
Always a pleasure reading your blogs... just went to Indian Science website....its simply great...
Sameer,
There is a really great progress in VoIP by Indians...
