the new economist guy in delhi is some fellow called james astill. i guess he is the one who admires pakistanis for their ability to sit around and "wonder what the heck is going on", and who thinks indians are "prickly nationalists".
i understand from his own writing that he spent some years in pakistan. i wonder what his experiences were there, other than just sitting around and wondering. i desist from being more specific, out of gallantry and courtesy.
james astill simply hates indians. i have never seen any other interview in the economist where the interviewee was humiliated and dissed like naresh goyal is here. now, i am not a big fan of naresh goyal, and i think it's quite possible that he has certain 'friends' in the middle east funding him, but it's unfair to act as though a budding tycoon is like he was peter sellers' blundering 'hrundi v bakshi' in that racist 'the party'.
shame on you, narendra goyal, for presumably having agreed to have this crap printed.

Interesting phenomenon this; i.e. white guy infatuation with Pakistanis in contrast to their hatred for India, Hindus in particular. I can well imagine the famous Pakistani "Mehmannawazi" (hospitality) that this fellow might have partaken of.
I've encountered one such white academic as a graduate student; a professor who had spent a few years in Pakiland on a Fulbright scholarship. This fellow had an unadulterated disdain, bordering on open hatred for India and Indians. Immediately after the 1998 nuke tests by India, he made comments like:
"Who is going to FEED India now?"
This james astill character needs to do a stint at some kind of "orientation camp" hosted by the
RAW or IB to inculcate respect for his host country.
Indians may be prickly for the reason of their nationalism; British journalists need no such reason to behave like pricks!
chtn,
The reason for the "gallantry and courtesy" is because he is talking about the Kandahar treatment (this is not exactly spoken about) - if you have trouble understanding what the Kandahar treatment means remember back to your days as an altar boy and how you got the priest-treatment - get it!
Pakis love to grovel before the whites and prove how much like the goras they are unlike the dark smelly hindoos (hing eating hindoos). Jinnah was a master groveller and loved to act like a doormat before the Mountbattens. Muhammad Iqbal the Kashmiri Pandit turned Muslim conjured up an imagined Arab ancestry for himself and tried in vain to pass himself off as Tagore's equal. It is easy to get an interview with the bigwigs in Pakistan. Whereas in India even a managing editor of some western rag will find it hard to get notied. As Hrundi Bakshi says, We Indians don't think who we are; we know who we are So some 3rd rate hack from a middling rag like the Economist will have no trouble finding his way in Pakistan. In India by the time he lands in Delhi airport his English will have been corrected a 100 times by some nondescript English teacher from Jhumritalaiya. Any surprise that the Economist hack loves working in Pakistan and doesn't look w\forward to working in India? That's why correspondents like Mark Tully or the guys from the Daily Telegraph have3 no problem working in India. It is the hacks who do.
Truti,
Your post is very incisive and intelligent.
I really like this blog, but I do not like the reactive attitude. OK, the Economist does hate Indians, especially Hindus. It's not because they love muslims. In fact, Brits hate muslims and Hindus equally. That's why they love to play their little games with both groups. We should not fall so easily for this ruse.
The best defense is an offense. Indians and especially Hindus are very sensitive people. Don't be! I don't care that brits write disparaging things about us. What bothers me is that not a single Indian or Hindu will disparage brits!
Why don't we invite or interview and show some support for the Scottish National Party or for Irish groups that want to break away from the UK? Every time on this blog they post some excerpt from Economist, and then there is some fuming and flaming, but nothing changes!
We should not jump for every single prick of the pen by some limey journalist who has a colonial hangover.
Play the same game...we should not be the victim. Yes, I already have heard one million times about the $10 trillion stolen, about our treasures in the British museums and in the Queen's coffers. Yes, I have seen these things and it sickens me, but I am not sickened by the englishmen. I am more sickened by our very own traitorous Hindus.
Whites will never really betray one another because there is a price to pay for the traitor. What price do we make Hindu traitors pay?
Nothing.
We can't just jump every time someone offends us. The answer to these things is...what do we do about it? First thing---DO NOT post any solutions or ideas on this blog. Just keep these ideas outside of this blog or any other public forum.
Learn from Chinese. They don't even pretend that whites like them. They know they don't and they could care less.
But, look at what they have accomplished. Out of the TOP 10 companies in the world, Chinese have three companies. So, they don't really care what whites think about them.
Look at how they manipulate public opinion---they'll fund anything that makes India look bad to ward off any attention to their games. I have a well-placed friend who told me that every time there is some scare about Chinese products, they fund some white news anchor to talk about outsourcing to India!
We Indians just cry and beat our heads---"Oh...stop picking on me!"
The problem with this attitude is that everyone will come picking at people who play the victim. It's human nature---when you are in danger, everyone comes after you. I'm sure even spear-throwing pygmies who have just converted to christianity will insult Hinduism. Will we cry? I hope not.
Every time someone says something good about Hinduism we get excited and we heap praises on these people---"Oh my God, this guy is my bhai! He can marry my sister now!"
Total bull****.
People who have power and wield power do not act in such a childish reactive way.
This blog is very informative and I praise and respect the moderators, but we need to tune our attitudes and our reactions.
yes, truti, good point you make.
chatrapath, let me give you three concrete suggestions you can follow up on. i have seen a lot of suggestions from you over the years, from your email ids such as shivaji, rick, et al, and i think it's time you put some of these ideas into action.
one. the chinese have been very successful is shutting americans up by creating an annual 'human rights violations by america' document. since you know so much about how to be proactive towards 'goras', why don't you make a similar document about 'human rights violations by white guys'?
two. why don't you find the scottish and irish nationalists and bring them to me? i'll interview them and get their views on the english published on rediff.com
three. you can find james astill's email id and tell him your views, if any, on his attitude.
