Wonder what effect export of Mangoes to the USA, in addition to the wretched Arab countries will have on the availability, price of Mangoes for the Indian consumer. Has GOI done a thorough analysis of supply/demand for Mangoes?
I saw Mangoes from India at the local Indian store - selling at $5 per fruit, Yes!
It would be beneficial for the Indian consumers if such enormous amounts are invested in building irradiation, cold storage, ancillary food processing and distribution facilities entirely to service the Indian market.
Whether it is Rice, Wheat or Mangoes, the interests of the Indian consumer need to be safeguarded first. Food security can be ignored only at our own peril.
Besides, has GOI negotiated any anti-patenting safeguards? In other words, what is the guarantee that some Yank (or American desi) will not genetically clone the Indian Mango, as they did with the Basmati rice strain? Has CSIR patented, for example the Ratnagiri Mango?
Seriously, this deal should not be operationalised. I'm with the Swadeshi proponents on this.
