Karunanidhi wrong, Ram an ancient Tamil icon

P Ananthakrishnan delves into scholarly and popular Tamil literature that celebrates Ram and Ramayan

One of the most celebrated quotations of Marx is the one about history repeating itself first as tragedy and then as farce. Had he been watching the television debates on the controversy regarding Ram Setu, he would have concluded that the real tragedy is that history has finally attained the steady-state of farce. The nonsense that is bandied in these discussions is staggering even when one takes into account the fact that so-called specialists are barely allowed to speak and, when they are, they are commanded to give their answers in binary, yes/no terms.

A case in point is the discussion on Ram in Tamil tradition. One historian said Ram had never been a popular god in Tamil Nadu and he was more a literary figure than a religious one. He went on to add that iconographic evidence of Ram in Tamil country was scarce and people even feared that if they worshipped Ram, tragedy would strike them. Another worthy stated that Ram was worshipped by a small group of Vaishnavites. Inevitably, the Aryan-Dravidian divide came up. The Great Political Thespian of India, M Karunanidhi, had the last word. He asked, rhetorically, "Who is this Ram? From which engineering college did he graduate?"

So while India's political parties debate Ram's historicity and issues like the nuke deal, the chinese push more & more into arunachal as well as along the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet border, as per latest news reports. Wonderful.

Yes, traditionally - according to the Valmiki Ramayana, Shri Rama is
Maryada Purushottam, i.e. the human personification of all that is virtuous and honourable.
According to some accounts, it was the Tamil saint Kamban who first
conceived of Rama as an avatar of Vishnu, followed by Tulsidas in Hindi. There is also a theory that the Vanara Sena comprised not of simians, rather of noble neanderthals!
In my opinion, this may be a plausible theory (differential human evolution across geography)worthy of research by natural historians, archaeologists, anthropologists etc.
I recently watched a documentary on the National Geographic channel which was an investigation into the possibility of neanderthals surviving to the present day in a remote corner of Russia.
Even according to the "Dravidian" narrative, Rama was an Aryan invader in southern peninsular India. Therefore, per "Dravidian" tradition - it would follow that present day "dravidians" are descendants of the Vanaras.
Just take a look at Karunanidhi and TR Baalu - can anyone deny that they are neanderthals, cavemen who missed the process of human evolution?
It is shameful though that the latter two are ignoble, wicked, christist neanderthals who deride their own ancestry.

I do not think it is proper to use such language against those who differ in their views, no matter how they seem to look, only because of their views.

Do read my posts on the subject.

It is not about Lord Rama at all. That is too much for a little worm like karunanidhi to even fathom.

The problem is the guy's failed desires, his impotence at his situation, and his grudge at the world at large which so many times has kicked, abused and refused to be a party to his unholy desires.

karunanidhi, if you see, is a old, cynical neo-corpse. Typically in this stage, when all humane desires have died and people wait for death to strike anytime, it is not uncommon for a lot of people to develop paranoia and hatred for everyone. It is not like karunanidhi has any great love for ravan worshippers. If tomorrow his little evil desires are spiked by someone of them, he will even say ravana was a molester or some such.

This is why our tradition prescribes retiring from worldly life at this stage, or taking sanyaas. For good people this is the time when they feel satisfied with their worldy journey and having seen it all, seek to know the divine. But for basically bad people like karunanidhi, who have spent all their lige scheming, lusting and lying, the cumulative sins of their lifetimes make their mind a crazy mess. Their baggage of past cribs and unfulfilled sinful desires makes it all the more difficult for them to renounce it. Hence they are caught in a vicious cycle. Again because they are living an abnormal life, doing things that younger people should be doing, this cycle becomes more and more vicious, until they die in a rot of mental retardation, disenchantment and filth.

Even God does not take them away quickly but lets them stew in the scalding stew of their own bad karma. He is living in his own private hell.

It is evident that Karunanidhi is a failure, ow he would not be doing such mad things in this stage of his life. But whatever his misdeeds, he was born a human. So he is to be pitied and given a decent burial atleast, and lets pray for his own good that ends his wrethched life quickly.

Its interesting to see ppl all over India (rightfully) fulminate against karunanidhi and his rantings on Ram..

But for ppl who are in the know of Dravidian politics in TN and experienced its hypocritical and hateful flavor of it.. his latest remarks are nothing but ' classic Karunanidhi'..

Karunanidhi is no " cynical neo corpse".. He is an astute and very intelligent past master at peddling Hindu hate as an ideology. For ppl who have not seen/heard his public speeches, lemme point out that is the finest exponent of it in Indian polity.. Few speakers including Vajpayee (whom i love) can match up to this guy when it comes to public rhetoric..

He comes from a "hoary tradition" of calling Ravana a Dravidian, Ram an Aryan God, slapping Vinayaka idols with chappals and has huge Hindu middle class support across TN. Even given Hindu's general tendency of shootig themslves in their foot, head and head all the time this 'Dravidian Stockholm Syndrome' behaviour is pretty unique!!!

I saw a lot of 'expert opinion' on the antiquity of the Ram Sethu bridge and how Karunanidhi is wrong in this blog and elsehwere..

Do you guys really believe that Karunanidhi does not know about the facts of Ram Sethu. Here is a guy who is a Hindu to the core inside the four walls of his house but who is spiteful of Hinduism when he sets foot into the political space simply because it pays(rich dividends) to do so.

This debating Karunanidhi on 'facts' has been going in TN for a long time (for ppl ignorant of TN politics). If you guys ever get to read about 'Cho' Ramaswamy and his brilliant intellectual attack of Dravidian politics, you would know that it does not realy matter in the grand scheme of things.

Political parties in the country espescially the BJP and Congress types have never been able to find a political leader who can rally a crowd in TN. The BJP/Congress leadership in TN is worthy of occupying a space in a circus in Chennai. Did u guys notice BJP's pitiful(bodering on the tragic) response to Karunanidhi in TN..How many more god given gifts do they need before they create atleast a ripple in politics.

This guy Karunanidhi is gonna be around for a while and cause maximum destruction of Hindu culture before he leaves politics for good...People in our country (sometimes even Rajeev) underestimate the evil genius of politicians like karunanidhi at Hinduism' own peril.

It is said there were 11 Ravana found in Sinhalese history such as Nala Ravana, Manu ravana, Punu ravana and Dasis Ravana. The most famous Ravana is the king who fought with Indian hindu prince Rama. He is called Dasis Ravana which means the king with 10 great talents. The Dasis Ravana lived lived nearly 5000years ago in Sri Lanka. He was a descendant of Surya Wansha and Hela Raskshasa tribe. (Ancient Sinhalese tribe) He was one of the best fighters in Angampora, the traditional martial arts of ancient Sinhale.
King Dasis Ravana was a great Scholar in Ayurvedic medicine. He was the person who invented Arka Shastra. The book Arka Prakshaya reveals this truth to the present world. As his willing to research in Ayurvedic medicine he wrote several books revealing the cures for many diseases. In one book he wrote “Eating beef cause to infect ninety eight new diseases to human beings. The book “Kumara Tantraya” which reveals the treatments for infant diseases was written by him accepting the request of his pregnant queen Mandodari.
He has children and the eldest one was Indrajith also known as Meghanada who followed his father’s steps. There are some hints in Sri Lankan rock inscriptions about the daughter of king Dasis Ravana.

King Ravana’s kingdom was Lankapura. The kingdom is almost disappeared today. But If you keen on Sri Lankan folklore and ola manuscripts there you can find some remaining sites of Lankapura today known as Seegiriya and Trincomalee.

King Ravana invented the bow of Violin. He also narrated very first Ragas, the musical compositions of Eastern classical music known as Lanka Dehena and Sinhala. Siva thandawa is one of the great devotional compositions done by him, which is still being in use in India.
He was the first king flew over the world with his aero plane, known as Dandumonaraya or Vimanaya, Kashtawahana.

Some evidence of Dandumonaraya the aeroplane is found in Rock inscriptions, Jataka Stories and Ola manuscripts. The Sinhalese folk stories are enriched with Ravana Stories.
King Ravana was continuing a vegan oriented life style and was a real nature lover. According to Lankavatara sutta he was Buddhist and worshipped Kashyapa Buddha. Once he invited Kashyapa Buddha to visit Lanka and deliver his sermon to Sri Lankan citizens who practice yoga and follow Buddhism.

Today the time has changed and many of us do not know the real history of king Ravana and throw our folk tales away without considering any valuable parts of them. King Ravana was one of the best emperors found in Sri Lankan History.

There are more than 300 Sinhalese village names related to king Ravana era. In addition, there are some more places and remains in which the Rama Ravana war took place in Sri Lanka.
