economist debate: does a country need manufacturing that badly? i personally think its value is exaggerated but @atanudey may agree with the idea

jun 30th, 2011 CE

in my opinion, we need to have balanced growth with agriculture not been denigrated, and manufacturing not being elevated as bad and good, respectively. not that atanu is saying that, but i think i am more worried about agriculture based on food security issues as well as agri-business based employment opportunities.

I used to think manufacturing is needed because the uneducated / unskilled need jobs - but the reality is that the 'lights-out' factory has put paid to that perspective. I visited a plant that manufactures compressors for air-conditioners and was amazed by the level of automation I saw - there was hardly anyone on the floor....

you still need manufacturing for strategic reasons, because if you 'outsource' defense production, you are living off the generosity of strangers - remember Nehru and his pathetic midnight letters begging (actually hectoring) Kennedy to provide. India should stop all imports of defense for 15 years and build locally instead. That would be a 'stimulus' which would really give a huge multiplier effect.

Of course - the Marigold Brothers will get a faxed message from Chomsky (an e-mail is not proletarian enough) suggesting that this is 'subsidy for the rich'. Not to mention immaculate Kingini and his beatific mother will not be able to get their assorted Italian 'acquaintances' any $$$$. So this is unlikely to happen

Off Topic: More loot for government?

http://www.smh.com.au/world/india-and-the-temple-of-jewels-20110704-1gzeq.html

Nothing in the Malayalam media about this? Seems this is the second case I've heard about in less than a year. The first was the find of silver at the Puri Jagannath temple. There are also regular strident calls to account for jewellery associated with temples by government officials.

Is there some kind of renewed effort to find and appropriate every last gram of gold associated with Hindu temples in India?
