Fundamentalism is the ummah's cornerstone

It is a seamless world of illiberalism, fanaticism and dogma. Those who dare to step out of this world are disowned by their co-religionists Kanchan Gupta

GLOBALISED ISLAM: THE SEARCH FOR A NEW UMMAH, BY OLIVIER ROY, RUPA, RS 395

For some strange reason that remains unfathomable in this part of the world where jihadi terror made its presence felt in the late-1980s when bloodthirsty Islamist separatists chanting Quranic slogans and waving Kalashnikovs chased all Hindus out of the Kashmir Valley, looting, raping and burning to establish "Nizam-e-Mustafa", 9/11 continues to remain the point of reference for recent studies emanating from the West on political Islam and its terrifying manifestations.

It is, as if, had Mohammed Atta and the rest of Osama bin Laden's boys failed in their "holy mission" to fly hijacked aeroplanes into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, and the shining symbol of American capitalism had not imploded into a pile of twisted steel, shattered glass and concrete rubble, the world would have pretended that Al Qaeda is the ummah's response to the Peace Corps.
