nytimes: us 'plants' stories in iraqi media and pays journalists

dec 1

a la the mitrokhin story: it's not as if it's only the russians and the chinese who plant propaganda stories and buys journalists. the americans do it too.

blogs are no less reliable than mainstream media; at least bloggers make their prejudices clear unlike the media.

on second thoughts, india's mainstream media *do* make their prejudices very clear. you notice how the volcker story has been buried; but uma bharati's tantrums get lots of air-play. similarly arjun singh's fascism was unremarked, but advani saying something was blown way out of proportion.

the only paper that i find relatively willing to present the right-wing perspective is the pioneer.

also India Today. But Today slams both sides equally. I like it.

For sums ranging from US$45,000 to $66,000, the Mid-Day story alleged, one could buy a news feature plugging their business, get interviewed (the business owner supplies the questions and answers themselves) and have their picture published on the much-scorned Page 3 of the Bombay Times, the city supplement of the Times of India.

In the United States or the United Kingdom, uproar would have erupted after the expose. But the Times of India (TOI) was not even pressed to explain the allegation to its 4.5 million estimated readers, or to any regulatory body. Instead, some attempted to defend the indefensible. Shobhaa De, novelist and acidic columnist, incredibly called the TOI move "brave" and the "future of journalism", never mind the reader being taken for a ride, if not criminal fraud, with no distinct boundaries marked between news and advertisements.

In a brazen display of contempt for the basic tenets of journalism, the "service"' meant that the clear divide between advertisement and editorial was blurred for a negotiable price. The Times of India is already infamous for often plugging its own businesses, such as its search engine and web portal, in its news pages.

Darkstorm,
Outlook is crap. And Vinod Mehta is a scum, no doubt. He's the Mahesh Bhat of journalism.
Loud, non-sensical and basically cheap.

I haven't seen Aaj Tak much. But i still feel India Today is much much better than any of its comtemporaries.

Anyway what choice do we have in India?

Kaunteya, since you don't like Mahesh Bhatt, does that mean you don't like his daughter Pooja Bhatt too?

Mahesh & Pooja Bhatt always appear to be singing Pakistan's praises. It's like forcing leftist ideology down your throat.

I too feel the same way about India Today,as DarkStorm.

In fact, regional language newspapers and certain weeklies are better than the mainstream English ones.At least, their zeal for publishing everything, gives us access to certain vital truths. Many of those who write letters to the respective editors discuss pertinent issues.

The above is a good one.
We have to choose our columnists. As Michael Corleone says "...to keep our enemies closer", need to read the bilge written by baddies too!

This Blog and certain others are really what I look forward to.People who are airily brushed aside as "aam janata and angoor janatha" by the supercilious, are the ones full of felicitous ideas and solutions!!

Oops,

It was a play on words, well silly me :-) (And to think that I am from Hindi Badlands)

Now back to the topic

India -Today is fair weather friend.

While BJP was in power it used to sing its paens, now ofcourse it has tilted other way.

What is more it is fast becoming a life style magazine and at this rate may even overtake slimes in its slimeness.

One of its better journalist was Swapan Dasgupta, who notwithstanding his tendency to use heavy sounding english and less than common turn of phrases was interesting to read.
(If I remember correctly he had doubted about NDA victory when popular perception was that it will win the elections)

Having said that, it holds no water in front of communist rags like Outlook and The Hindu.

Sometimes I have a suspicion that Vinod Mehta is taking money from Chinese

Come on Rajeev,

You too got carried by 'honesty' of US? US is not a saint as it tried to project.
US has its own propoganda like former USSR and China.
It has to satisfy its lobbies.
Its media are controlled by different lobbies, we saw how they were instrumental in spreading Dubya's 'Iraq WMD' news.
Look at how bush wanted to 'bomb' Al-Jazeera in Qatar.... But their media is better off than the chinese one and maybe Indian one.
India media... forget it...its the most cheap and bullshit media... dominated by marxists... TOI, Outlook, NDTV etc.... Now a days we find these cheepies coming out with 'colourful' articles... full of Page-3 thrash, fimly masala and semi-naked photos. (See times website u will see all the dirt)
See the TV, youll see overzealous news persons who even interview the servants of P-3 persons incase of a celebrity wedding or a party. One can see their immaturity from their news reporting.
There are a few responsible and GOOD news papers and media persons left and a few Newsworth news channels. Well, many of such thrashgivers survived, thanks to Mithrokhin money and money from chinese and outsider lobbies, esp. christists (Arundhati Roy and other trash-talkers).
Hope Indian public wake up and make these idiots realise that they need to change and their Mothrokhin money cant keep them survived for long... they need to change, else they will die out...
