From the mailbox: How to Write an India Story

dec 6th

yes, i found the amy waldman stories on the indian highways (as i generally find amy waldman stories) to be supercilious and silly.

her next article today was on aids. the usual ngos were figured prominently. also, the undercurrent of that one was that it is the dreaded hindu fundamentalists who are responsible for the spread of aids. why, the hindu fundamentalists talk about abstinence, so they are causing aids to spread. smart, very smart, amy dear.

but it must be admitted that she is better than the execrable barbara crossette. i have to believe that woman had some serious psychological trauma when she was in india. and i believe that was mostly because she was hanging out with the JNU crowd all the time.

crossette's magnum opus:

How to write an India story, indeed! How predictable some of these foreign reports are!

Indian leftist marxists are known to have ties with hard-core rightwing christists and Islamists abroad.
No doubts abt it... moreover the american education and awareness is limited and their education remains backward (And goes backward thanks to creationism, saying earth formed 6000 years back) Im not talking abt sciences, but other aspects related to outside their country or its satellites in europe.

Hence you find them referring to all the checklist items mentioned by manish. viz. Cows, kamasutra, beggars, snake charmers, bride burning, caste and what not...

We should use a china kind of approach and write them abt our sterotypes of america... gun carrying, having multiple sex partners, teenage pregnancies, teaching bible as 'science', war-mongering, fat people eating burgers etc. etc. (Remember chinese version of 'US human rights abuses)????

I read the latest installment of the Golden Quadrangle series, about the spread of AIDS. I was left wondering A. Waldman was actually covering the roads or the AIDS situation in India. The whole article had absolutely not one positive thing to say about India. Amazing! Unfortunately, this is what a huge number of people will be reading. It looks like she wants to find negative things everywhere she goes.

I find the NY Times reports silly or stupid. But dont blame them for that. they dont understand the complex society India is. and foegt Amy Waldman we dont make it easy to understand even our own
what they write about the filth and dirt in India is true.India will improve only if the system helps in people stopping to defecate out in the open( and they fix the rail coaches so that the poop doesnt fall directly onto the rails) and people throw trash out of the windows

What do you expect pigs to do? Take great efforts to dig out dirt even if there is none. I am sure they will grunt & whine even if the whole of India is as affluent as say singapore etc.
