Well, as an atheist myself, I'll say that a lot of us go by Occam's Razor - the law of economy of belief. Occam's Razor provides a reasonable framework in which to look for answers, and even which answers to look for and care about.

For Advaita folks, God is less important than the Self. Learning to be your own Self is more important than anything -- because you ARE more important than anything in this Universe.
