the risks of tampering with climate

will geoengineering work? more pertinently, do we want to take the risk that it won't?

this is also a typically american response: instead of going after the demand-side, go after the supply-side. eg. in drugs, they don't want to detox their addicts, they want to burn poppy plantations in columbia. here too, instead of getting americans to drastically curtail oil use, they want to 'fix' the climate and continue to use fossil fuels merrily.

i think geoengineering is a bad idea. compare to what earlier efforts to 'fix' things have done: eg. the straightening of rivers in the florida everglades has led to environmental catastrophe, and they are now trying to reverse the damage by allowing the rivers to re-meander.

Solving the wrong problem is better than asking/demanding/forcing people to change their habits :-(

Shanshan Du, a former GM engineer, and her husband, Yu Qin were arrested and charged with trying to sell stolen GM hybrid secrets to China.

It's rather difficult to have a state mandated "detox" of millions. It's a logistical nightmare and also perilously close to vilolation of civil liberties. Similarly it would be silly to prepare a plan to stop private citizens from driving - though the current liberal administration will try harebrained schemes like "Cap and Trade". The recent book by Steve Levitt has covered one geo engineering research by Nathan Myhrvold - that is promising. And anyway, nature also did "geo engineering" in case of Mt Pinatubo. Pre judging such approach as wrong is rather bad science.

There is a mention in the srimad bhagavatam that 'Material solution to material problems creates bigger problems than the actual problem' this is instructed by Bhakt Prahlad to his demonic classmates while preaching about the Supreme Lord. One should seek for a spiritual solution. the relevant chapter is here in Srimad Bhagavatam Canto-7

So, very true if we look back in history. this case is not going to be any different.
