Strategic blunders hurt India

Rajeev Srinivasan on how Pakistan has outsmarted India through clever foreign policy

Several distinct but related events have shown that India's alleged Pakistan policy is either non-existent or self-defeating. First, there is the all-but-complete transfer of two 635-megawatt Chinese nuclear reactors to Pakistan, which will allow the latter to build 24 more nuclear bombs every year in addition to their existing stockpile of 70-90, already bigger than India's.

Second, the violence in Jammu and Kashmir is a direct result of the decision by the GoI to withdraw 30,000 troops a few months ago. Third, the apparent willingness by Afghan President Karzai to cooperate with the intensely anti-India Haqqani network implies the total failure of India's efforts to be a stakeholder in that nation.

China has simply ignored the pro-forma noises that the US made at the Nuclear Suppliers' Group regarding likely weapons proliferation because of the new reactors being transferred to Pakistan. Selig Harrison, writing in the Boston Globe, pointed out how proliferation is part of Pakistani national policy. Despite this, and despite all the GoI's exertions to ram the so-called 'nuclear deal' down India's throat, America has no qualms about the Pakistani stockpile.

Thus the dubious nuclear deal has had the effect of strengthening Pakistan's hand, while constraining India's own puny efforts at building a deterrent against China, almost exactly as opponents of the deal said, while the GoI proceeded with it in a haze of lies and dissimulations.

Rajeev,

Is Balkanization of Pakistan possible? Considering that China is infinitely (for the lack of a better word)powerful than India militarily and strategically.

As for the Americans, if their strategic interests are served they would happily support Pak and avoid the Balkanization (if it were to happen).

It must be double bonanza for Pak - Americans eating out of its hands and the Han support, not to mention a spineless GoI.

the hans and the yanks are both propping up pak -- which is playing the two off against each other, while following its own agenda all the time (which really means a pak + han alliance).

but they are being too clever. the jihadis at some point will start attacking the hans esp in xinjiang. we could, if we had any cojones, encourage this by the simple expedient of introducing weapons with 'made in pak' markings into xinjiang, and weapons with 'made in china' markings into the hands of pak dissidents in baloch, sind, etc.

eventually baloch, sind, and pashtun will have to secede. we have to ensure that PoK+j & k do not secede. we need to hold it with force if necessary, waging outright war ruthlessly, not the namby-pamby stuff going on now.

It would be really good to see the jihadi sabre-rattling and its handling by the Hans in Han country.

As long as the christist Antonia is at the helm, the N-E can never be used to exert India' influence and to be a major thorn in the Han flesh.

Political pussyfooting has already demoralised the forces - are we ready to wage a full fledged war? Some strategic analysis on this would be helpful.

Rajeev, Wonderful article. It is published in DNA.. you must try to get it published in other papers so that the nation knows what our idiotic govt is doing, I fear DNA is very limited in that only a few indians read it. The italian is selling our country with the help of a spineless political class at the helm. Something must be done to remove them at all costs.

Rajeev, any link where I can read up more on the specifics of Pakistan selling part of POK to China years back?
