on christopher hitchens, one of the finest intellectuals of our times

jul 12th, 2010

there is the occasional brit essayist who is simply incandescent. hitchens is one, another is theodore dalrymple (not to be confused with the execrable toady william).

hitchens has had a flair of annoying people on all sides of the spectrum: left-wing whites are appalled by what they view as his treason in supporting -- for entirely good reasons, as hitchens makes clear -- the iraq war.

right-wing whites are appalled by his masterful attacks on MTeresa ('the ghoul of calcutta", "the missionary position") and on pope ratzinger (he wants to arrest him for crimes against humanity for having done nothing about widespread abuse of children in his church), and his generally in-your-face atheism.

you gotta love a guy like this. this, apart from the literary quality of his writing, replete with classical references, and completely ruthless, especially as he does not suffer fools gladly.

unfortunately people are now writing about him as though he were pretty much dead already, not just in chemotherapy.
