bye-bye, negroponte and wind-up laptop

aug 1st, 2006

a rare, sensible decision by the indian government. after all, if this thing flies, india can always come back on board.

this is a boondoggle that negroponte will never pull off.

glad india told him to buzz off. the mit media lab is severely overhyped, and negroponte is more showman than visionary.

Rajeev,

I agree on not buying Negroponte's crap. Yankees - especially Ted Kennedy East Coast Pundit types think they are the best at everyhting, truth is they are not

However - I have to say I disagree with the philosophy. We could go the Simputer way. This is one project that needs funding - and ideas on technology application. If we can make a Dumbed-down interface to the computing world for the masses - Babudom can be circumscribed (I mean that in a Secular way). To say in a dismissive tone that we need more teachers may be misplaced.Actually what we need is more "working" teachers - since the sarkaari ones are all Jholla Wallah Commies anyways

Good to see you posting at a fast clip today. As Eric Raymond said in his paper - one way Linus kept it interesting was rapid version release!!

A must read. Arun Shourie has for 10 years been my personal favorite - as a media guy, minister or any other role. Truly a CHAMPION . Read his two part Op-Ed in Takloo Gupta's paper.
Part 1
Part II
And for folks who want to understand truly how the pattern of separatism etc. started in modern India - buy his book

ah, ghost writer, it's true that sometimes the right decision is taken for the wrong reasons. in those cases, we thank the Lord for small mercies.

it is true that public sector eduction truly sucks in india -- at the primary level. see the gurcharan das article i had posted some time ago (from foreign affairs). and the marxists want *more* public sector schools (as they are unionized) whereas the common man (whom they weep copious crocodile tears over) is voting with his feet by paying exorbitant fees to private sector schools.

there is a very interesting fight going on, by the way, in kerala, between the church godmen and the marxists in government about how to share the spoils from private sector (college) education, which is a huge money-making operation for the godmen. the marxists apparently want a piece of it.

the marxist education minister (a christist himself) told the godmen to stop shouting themselves hoarse about 'minority' rights. i love it. two of my favorite groups at loggerheads.
