There is much crowed about "mumbai spirit". I guess the term first came from some rag that was echoed multiple times all over. And now it is part of our lexicon. Barring South Mumbai with it's sea side facing bungalows, rest of it is rat infested shit hole.
Mumbaikars are not having "spirit" in the true sense of the term. They are indifferent. No one cares for the other despite poster boys springing up to become presidents of the societies.
Rapid urbanization in and around Mumbai with next to nil development in rest of Maharastra and elsewhere attracts the migrants. Apart from pressuring the local resources, the crime is bound to shoot up. Despite MNS claims, they are well aware that it is the Bihari labour that drives the market because "ordinary mumbaikar" is too sozzled up or useless to work.
So it's not surprising to see that the city is becoming unsafe for women:
