Nuke test will spike deal: US

Here is what the US said within hours after the non-PM and his band of advisors portrayed nuke deal as a success.

Bharat Karnad et al were correct after all. This deal is all about stunting India's strategic options at the current level. CTBT, FMCT, NPT etc. through the back door.

As I wrote earlier, The USA used the classic "bait and switch" trick. Maino Mohan Singh's government swallowed hook line and sinker.

Incisive analysis by Shri. Satish Chandra in The Pioneer. Personally, I do not find anti-terror cooperation, military exercises, logistics support to U.S forces or abandonment of the non-alignment shibboleth objectionable per se, as long as it promotes India's national security interests.

There is also nothing inherently wrong in acquiring military hardware from the Americans, if it is not available from other sources, including indigenous ones. This is where the onus should be on the Yanks to overcome the deficit of trust caused by their own bad behaviour in the past - impounding Sea Harriers post Pokhran 2, prescriptive sermons on Kashmir, attempt to browbeat India with the 7th fleet, interference in India's internal affairs like mollycoddling the "Khalistanis" & funding evangelism etc.

Making a legally binding commitment regarding moratorium on christian evangelism in India & a guarantee of spare parts for any military hardware purchased from them - in perpetuity would be a good start.

Friendship & cooperation against the common islamic enemy is a must for India and America.
Constriction of India's independence of action with respect to our own adversaries, such as Pakistan, however is totally unacceptable.

While some give and take would necessarily be involved while dealing with the world's only superpower, the status of a client state, *anybody's client state* simply does not behoove a great civilization of the size and antiquity as India.

What do MMS & co. have to show for their shameful surrender of national sovereignty ? Is there the assurance of an American nuclear umbrella afforded to Japan & the European client states, itself of doubtful utility ?

As Brahma Chellaney says in his commentary, the deceitful methods of negotiating the nuclear deal will surely end up in the dissipation of goodwill for America among the Indian people.

This is a perfect example of how NOT to "win friends and influence people."
