That this is considered 'shocking' implies that some people have been out of india for long time. the way things are going here, the only shocking thing would be the election of someone deserving like APJ for Presidant.
One thing ou can be sure, if anything goes wrong in indian polity, commies would be doing their fare share of 'wrecking the constituion from within'.
indian polity is on downward spiral. I blame the general apathy of indians like me for this.

seems like much more political upheavels are in wind inNew Delhi. In case Mrs. Plunder Patil loses the first casualty would be ManMoron Singh who would be soon resigning taking moral (sic) responsibilty.
However, if Mrs. Plunder Patil wins, Sonia's control of India will be complete because then she will have the commander of Indian military under her thumb. ManMoron will become more of a non-PM and cabinet would sometimes know about the decisions they made after the presdant would sign them into executive order.
We Are IN Danger NOW. For all practical purpose, India can be regarded as a slave nation.

Thank you, Rajeev, for posting this. I tend to be equally cynical as sansk, but this is probably a real low point even for Indian politics. Political issues don't interest me in the slightest these days, but this makes my blood boil. I beg terrorists and other assorted thugs to exterminate our political class (barrind the odd exception), they would be doing India a real favour. Too bad, they got sloppy on Dec 13, 2001. As always, a few underpaid guards paid with their lives.

you mentioned an interesting point that political issues do not interest you. I am sure this is common to most of Indian people. However, in giving up on politics, the good people have left the fiekld wide open to charlatans. The current symptoms have grown from a single root...i.e. people leaving field open for crooks, criminals and even foreigners.
IT must be said that despite all protestations to the contrary we have become an utterly self-centred people who have lost most of the sense of belonging to the nation. Today, out President is being elected on gender and regional biases. Tomorrow, we will be doing same for prime minister, and bureaucrats and military. It won't take long before India unravels.
And Finally, nuclear weapons cannot ensure the survival of India....neither can a seemingly strong economy because all weapons are waste in hands of cowards and even dangerous in the hands of criminals like those who rule us. And economy won't be strong anymore if political instability (this is the next step...wait for election to be finished) takes root.

There is another angle. The president is also the supreme commander of the armed forces.In effect she or he is not only the first citizen but also the first soldier of the country.
Setting personal examples and country before self is what they teach in National Defence Academy and IMA. And punishment is swift like Court Martial and dismissal with disgrace etc even for small financial misconduct.
Now how will our President of future look straight in to her face of the soldier at Siachin
