i am conflicted about whether this is a good thing. on the one hand, design and manufacturing can cross-fertilize each other, so that design for manufacturability can be enforced. that is a major part of the argument made by people talking about the hollowing of american industry.
on the other hand, chip fabs are famously exploitative of power and especially water. yes, shahryar, we *could* desalinate seawater for these fabs, but that would add dramatically to the capital and operating costs.
