Center for South Asia: Joyojeet Pal,
Narendra Modi and Social Media from Gandhinagar to the Silicon Valley

October 12th @ 12:30pm
Encina Hall West, Room 219

Lunch will be served.

Boasting the second most popular social media following among politicians in the world, Narendra Modi sits atop an online machine that circumvents the mainstream media speaks directly to the citizenry. In this talk, we follow the evolution of Prime Minister Modi's social media messaging from his early days on social media in 2009 to the events leading up to his September 2015 talk in Silicon Valley. We examine the use of modernity as a theme on Modi's social media presence, and discuss the ways opposition to the Prime Minister has been attacked on social media. We consider Twitter use in this context to start a discussion on the potential for institutional capture of social media, long heralded as a means of democratizing dialogue.

Joyojeet Pal is Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's School of Information.
