after the famous headline in the nypost(?) some years ago ("feds to ny: drop dead!").
i don't think there is any good reason to throw good taxpayer money after bad in regards to detroit. the american automakers have become dinosaurs, and deserve to die out. the auto industry is also bad for the world because it encourages less efficient transportation. we need more public transport.

I completely agree with the idea that taxpayer money should not be used to rescue the American auto industry. But I would be wary of of supporting public transport at the cost of personal transportation: urban housing + public transportation is a distinctly leftist/socialist thought. Why not let market forces play out? If it becomes too expensive to maintain a car, there will be critical mass achieved in terms of the number of people wanting and using public transportation.
"public transportation is a distinctly leftist/socialist thought" ???
Perhaps the post office, water mains, sewerage, public highways are all leftist thoughts which should be eliminated?
