new kleiner perkins fund for green energy

may 2nd, 2008

there's a gold rush towards clean energy. but i am beginning to get a little concerned that the push for biofuels is affecting
a) forests which are being cut down to plant soy
b) crop prices as corn etc are being diverted to ethanol
c) marginal cropland in poor countries as it is also being pushed to biofuel production rather than food
d) food prices, which are climbing vertiginously

there's an element of neo-imperialism in items (c, d). rich countries are forcing poor people to starve or turn over their land, in effect, for the production of ethanol so that they can drive their SUVs and other gas-guzzlers in comfort.
