"Reverend" Wright is undoubtedly a bigoted nut and a deranged moron. But, come to think of it, he is no different from the other christist fundamentalist nuts - Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Ron Watts, Billy Graham etc who had declared post-9/11 that their hateful christist "god" had "punished" America for things like homosexuality! Or the sick christist fanatics who routinely picket the funerals of American soldiers killed in the line of duty in Iraq, dishonouring the sacrifice of the soldiers and insulting their families with their hateful christist bigotry.
The only difference between "Rev" Wright and "Rev" Falwell would be their race & colour. It took a comedian, Jon Stewart to point this out.
On another note, America is certainly in a recession and a decline. I'm observing long lines of junkies near homeless shelters and food banks and beggars at hitherto safe places like Starbucks. Although, John Mc Cain is a far more credible individual, none of the three candidates inspires confidence. I think we're going to see a poorer, more insular America. This is the price of the extended American presence in Iraq. I don't understand why they could not have withdrawn 4 years ago and allowed Mohammedan butchers fight each other. And the excessively liberal availability of credit way beyond the earning capacity of bubba. All of the regular folks who work hard, play by the rules will pay for the profligacy of these irresponsible people. It is sad to see the only counter to Islamism in the globe
diminishing at home in this manner.
*i* didn't call the blighter a 'reverend', i'll have you know. i just called him 'one jeremiah wright'. there's nothing to revere in these christist godmen. the pioneer has this habit of putting 'mr' and 'mrs' and other honorifics in front of people's names: must be some editorial policy.
yes, one can observe the recession in real terms in the light traffic in the roads around the silicon valley. clearly not like it was in the days of the dot-com boom. and people are being hit with sticker shock at the pump. i can remember paying under $1/gallon for gas, and now to pay $4 hurts.
i am not sure it's iraq alone, it's the hollowing out of the economy that may be the culprit. i have been re-reading jacques servan-schreiber's "le defi americain" from 1968, wherein he observed that europe was being overwhelmed by a surging america, beaten back in all sorts of fields, especially innovation and finance. now it appears the same is coming true of asians (including those vile arabs with all the money in the world.) indians have this great opportunity to grab a piece of the pie, which of course will be thwarted by vatican-sonia, beijing-chidambaram, pentagon-manmohan, et al.
