more on why ELM is mum on nano in gujarat

oct 7th, 2008

i am very pleased that they have no idea what to say. this shows the utter irrelevance of the ELM in reality. nobody, including the tatas, pays the slightest attention to them, other than paying lip service.

that's the unkindest cut.

first, the people of gujarat totally ignore the ELM's fulminations and elect modi with a thumping majority.

second, the biggest industrial group in india says "we don't care about all  your claims that mohammedans are being decimated in gujarat. it makes complete rational sense for us to invest there even if mohammedans are being decimated there. in fact we don't believe your claims that mohammedans are being decimated. so, in effect, up yours".

this is great. take that, rajdeep sardesai, prannoy roy, and teesta setalvad.

things are actually working in gujarat better than in most other parts of the country, despite the crushing poverty you see there (which you don't see so much in kerala, thanks to all the counterfeit and real money coming in from the gulf). i was impressed some time ago when i went to gujarat during one of their investors' meets, and modi laid out rationally and logically how it makes sense to invest there. it turns out that large amounts of investment are pledged (and unlike in kerala) most of it is actually realized on the ground. i also had to go to a resort about 90 km outside ahmedabad, and astonishingly, the roads were so good that the trip was made in not much more than an hour!

Nizhal Yoddha,

You are wrong on one count here :-)
One DOES NOT see crushing poverty in Gujarat. The people are extremely enterprising and hard-working and make a good living. I would say, there is very little poverty in Gujarat today and a very few people lead a hand-to-mouth existence.

And to be sure, to support your point, even the Muslims are very safe in Gujarat. I have stayed in Ahmedabad for two years immediately after the riots (June02 to Apr04) and I find Gujarat to be one of the best places to live and work in India. Even Maharashtra (my home state) does not come close

Narendra Modi is loathed by many as corrupt officials & ministers just cannot carry on their activities with impunity.

I believe even Vasundhara Raje has achieved a lot in Rajasthan.

No wonder kingani brat is frenziedly campaigning there.

The following letter by one Kajal Chatterjee (Kolkata) in Pioneer gets it right:

"....why isn’t anyone blaming the West Bengal Government and Tata Motors for their poor choice of project site. Mammoth projects like the Durgapur Steel Plant and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works came up in the State without any protests. This is because those industries were located on infertile, barren tracts of Burdwan district, causing no threat to farmers and their land. But the present regime instead of encouraging the Tatas to utilise the sparsely populated barren tracts of Burdwan, Purulia or Bankura districts, was hell-bent on setting up the plant in fertile Singur, which is known as the ricebowl of Bengal. Offering the farmers there a lumpsum amount for their land is hardly any compensation.

The failure of the Nano project was inevitable as the police and armed CPI(M) cadre mercilessly came down upon poor villagers during the acquisition process, thereby alienating the latter. It is not Ms Banerjee but Newton’s third law of motion that has thrown a spanner in the schemes of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mr Ratan Tata."

For amusement, I think it might be a good idea to send a letter to congresswoman betty mcclolum (or something), who wrote a letter to the state department to not give a visa to modi in case he did apply for it. We should request her to also write a letter to secratry Rice to deny Ratan Tata also a visa to USA. And also cc this letter to the entire ELM. I wish i had the time to do it.

Rajeev! There was a (planted, am sure) news item that said- the AP govt did not need it as badly as Modi and that ysr had nothing to prove and so didnt show that much interest! sour grapes isnt? incidentally in the same news item the 'official' said - 'the TATA person while on his way to see the AP land was talking about the gujarat plant :-)these guys are real jokers! what silly script writers all these fellas have!

mayuresh, interesting comment. i mentioned crushing poverty based on what i observed among the construction laborers and others i saw when i was there. i also have the feeling that much of the land in gujarat is not that fertile, which is why they have been forced to become hard-working traders. of course gujaratis have made their mark as resilient and creative businessmen. glad to hear that you feel there is not so much poverty there as i thought.

it is quite interesting that this ansari fellow and ratan tata both ditched bengal for gujarat!

in case you don't remember,

1. ansari was the tailor fellow who was posed as the poster-boy of the communist media, allegedly begging for his life with folded hands

2. ansari was given 'refuge' in west bengal by the communists

3. ansari soon left west bengal and went back to gujarat and now just wants to be left alone by the ELM

Praful Bidwai was just stunned; so it took him so many days to react.

Now he has opened a multipronged attack on the Tatas;

When did Praful become an expert on mergers and acquisitions, labor relations, environment and automobile engineering ?

just sample this :
"However, the Nano is likely to have serious safety and maintenance problems because its design cuts many corners and uses flimsy materials instead of solid, durable ones."
