not getting the japanese on our side is a signal failure of indian diplomacy. i think we have far more in common with the japanese, in terms of mutual interests (containing china and peaceful development in asia) than with most others, including the US.

It's impossible to get Japan on our side on our own, because Japan is intimately part of the US security structure for the Asia-Pacific region. With US being their largest market, Japan is captive to US interests.
