Quite shameful actually for the Indian-American commmunity. They just allowed a college kid hang out to dry, who was guilty of nothing more than a freshman prank, and the resulting panic, when it went bad. Wonder why no Indian American organization came out in support of Dharun Ravi? Even that pedophile serial rapist Anand Jon got more support from the Indian American community than Ravi. How in the world did the prosecutors get a conviction in this case, when even they were not sure why the Italian dude killed himself?

It saddened me when I read the verdict. I was rooting for Ravi but bottom line is, he bullied a fellow student. Luckily the jury didn't find him guilty for the murder. I know that this case had a lot of visibility because of homosexuality involved. I hope the same type of judgement is rendered in other cases of bullying.

What a travesty! Ravi behaved as an immature jerk, but a quick peek at 2 men kissing in a dorm room can hardly justify a such an atrocious verdict. Although the specter of Clemanti's suicide hung over the trial, Ravi's defense was not allowed to demonstrate Clemanti's state of mind well before the incident. He had written two documents on his computer before he joined Rutgers, that, from the titles at least, suggest he was already considering suicide. Then there was the fact that he came out to his mother, who didn't support his sexuality, shortly before he jumped from a bridge that he frequented with her. Ravi's actions may have precipitated his suicide, but he was already quite messed up. A tragedy all around.

A racist verdict. The punishment is disproportional to the crime. I'm wondering what the composition of the jury was. Also note that Ravi declined to take "600 hours community service + explulsion from the country" deal, indicating that he actually thought he would be acquitted. Imagine the outcry if Ravi had belonged to a different country or a different religion.

Nah, I don't think that Dharun Ravi should have harassed that poor gay kid, which ultimately led to the fellow's death. Ravi's behaviour was inexcusable, and the product of his own personal prejudices and juvenile mentality. His taunting led to someone's death, and he should be made to feel regret over it. The fact that he's of Indian origin is incidental, and shouldn't gain him any sympathy.

san,

you have no idea what you are talking about. he is not charged with the other guy's death, just turning on the camera for less than 5 seconds to look into his own room, getting caught by surprise at what he saw and turning off the camera immediately.

if what you say is how the law should be, he should get 10 years even if the other guy had not taken his life (btw, that guy's mother rejected him which is probably why he took his life).

and if your objection is to tweeting, should are you for banning twitter?
