kanchan gupta: US 'hot pursuit' leaves Musharraf sweating

mar 4th, 2007

hope something comes out of this.

it's not as though "apres moi le deluge" as louis xiv of france said -- after me, the flood.

musharraf keeps saying, "If i go, the terrorist fundamentalists will take over". on the contrary, musharraf himself is a terrorist fundamentalist. the yanks know this. as soon as he outlives his usefulness, he's going to be dog-meat.

remember manual noriega and saddam hussein, dictators that the yanks feted for years and then unceremoniously dumped? we should soon be able to add one more name to that list: pervez musharraf. the only question is whether musharraf will emerge with his life intact or whether he will be dispatched like saddam hussein.

US hot pursuit has Pak sweating

Could lead to Musharraf's ouster, fears envoy

Kanchan Gupta | New Delhi

As US Senators push for harsher American action against Pakistan for its failure to curb the neo-Taliban operating from its territory and a beleaguered Bush Administration begins to show signs of despair with its "stalwart ally" Gen Pervez Musharraf, alarm bells have begun to ring in Rawalpindi's Army House and Islamabad's corridors of power.

What has added to Gen Musharraf's increasing discomfort is Iran, no friend of the US, deciding to label Pakistan a terrorist sanctuary. Iran's top hardline cleric, Hojatoleslam Ahmad Khatami, addressing a large gathering after Friday prayers in Tehran, said: "Though Pakistan is our neighbour, little by little it is losing its neighbourly manners. Pakistan has become a sanctuary of terrorists."

A measure of the gathering gloom is reflected in a surprise statement by Pakistan's Ambassador to the US Mahmud Ali Durrani that "anti-terrorism co-operation among the US, Afghanistan and Pakistan is eroding". Mounting American pressure on Gen Musharraf could lead to his ouster, he adds.....

More on US policies of 'hot pursuit' -- or in this case, hot escape?

US Forces Indiscriminately Shoot Afghans

Normally, the US State Dept in its human rights report, likes to fault the security forces of other countries, including India. But as US soldiers themselves come under fire, they're not demonstrating any moral superiority over anyone else.
