maybe a bit belated, but here's to all of you:

also, i believe the ponkala at the devi temple at attukal in trivandrum, the largest religious gathering of women anywhere in the world, went off peacefully. women gather to cook pots of ponkala (rice sweetened with raw brown sugar, somewhat like the tamil pongal) in small fires they set up. this happens in a radius of about 10 km from the temple site near the padmanabha swamy temple and the fort in trivandrum. pretty impressive show. i once got caught in it as i arrived by train. the area around trivandrum central station was totally taken over by women (men are cordoned off).
