The NYT has formally come out against Narendra Modi by publishing an editorial attack on him:

They don't mention the train-burning which caused the riots, only that the riots happened. They claim that Modi has made Muslims in Gujarat poorer than other Gujaratis. They also claim that he has been preaching "strident Hindu nationalism", essentially parroting accusations made by the Indian Left and the ruling Congress Party without challenging on their veracity.
