It about time there is competition for this rabidly anti Hindu marxist mouthpiece masquerading as 'The Hindu".

Have you ever had the feeling that you have everything you could possibly want - and yet, there's that certain something missing from your life? Many of us at The Times of India have increasingly felt that phantom absence.

With a circulation of 3.5 million, we are today the world's largest English newspaper across formats, sizes and genres. And yet, there has been this strange void. Call it a Chennai-shaped hole.

We have long dreamed of having our masthead in the historic southern city of Chennai, where there is such a premium placed on the written word. In many ways, it was our final frontier - at least within India.

Today, we have filled that void with the long-awaited launch of our Chennai edition. For every one of us at The Times of India, it is an honour to be in Chennai. We have been humbled by the response we have received ever since we started laying the ground for our entry (so much so that we're already planning on enhancing our printing capacity).

Chennai is known for embracing those who have chosen to make Chennai their home - what better example than Rajnikanth? - and we hope it will accept us as its own.

The wonder of Chennai is the poise and wisdom with which it straddles tradition and modernity. It's a city equally at ease with the old and new, where the past flows almost seamlessly into the future. A city that values culture and commerce without diluting its commitment to either.

Chennai is an ancient cradle of learning - and today, it is reaping the benefits. The city has become a hub for financial and IT majors, and a manufacturing base for several auto giants.

This ability to cherish the old and welcome the new bodes well for a union of minds between The Times of India and Chennai. We are a paper that is constantly at the cutting edge of change but also fiercely proud of our 170-year-old heritage.

For although The Times of India has transformed itself in line with the changing needs of our readers, our core values remain constant. Our cornerstone: to serve our readers.
