superbowl

feb 5th, 2008

i am kind of glad the pats lost. for one, boston is suddenly a big sporting town with the pats, the red sox and the celtics all at or near the championship level. that's not fair, it has to be distributed around. although it is true the pats were pathetic for a long time, and the red sox ('babe ruth's curse') were miserable for 86 years.

but i am not happy that the giants won. bloody new yorkers are full of themselves anyway.

i can claim some allegiance to both the pats and the giants, since i have lived in both their home areas. but i don't like either of them.

i feel bad though that the pats' perfect season didn't really come through fully. 19-0 would have been awesome.

Rajeev,

I haven't lived here long enough, but this is certainly the only Super Bowl that I have found interesting. The action in earlier years ended with the NFC/AFC championships, like last year's AFC where the Colts beat the Pats, or the one earlier (2004 season) when the Pats beat the Steelers. And I being an AFC fan did not pay much attention to the NFC games. Even then I got to see the Giants's incredible run on the road, including the classic NFC title game when they beat the Packers. There's been some good football this year. And the NFC gets a 2nd title in this decade, so it's not an all AFC thing. I wasn't looking forward to the SB this time. Being a mid-Westerner we yawned - another New York-Boston matchup?

And we all had a good laugh, when they called the Giants "World" Champions. Their "World" seems to have borders with Canada and Mexico, with oceans on the other two sides. I have been in US for a long time, but still wonder, for a country, that is involved in so many countries, having immigrants from all over the world, why would their citizens would call themselves that, in any sports.
Any thoughts?

Common sentiment, Gopinath. Geography doesn't matter much though. You have this game played elsewhere or some other country's team beat the Superbowl champs, and you'll have made a mockery of this so-called world championship. Till then it is a matter of preference.

I doubt US soccer championship will ever be called World ...you get the drift.

No country, other than the US, can field even one NFL comparable roster. Save Canada - which plays Canadian Football, a predecessor version of American Football - no other land can even try.

Although interestingly these days the NFL High School Championships have been won by non-US teams. These tournaments feature one high school team representing the US, with other countries - Canada, France, Mexico (?) sending national teams. Canada has done pretty well at these.

So the SB being termed the world championship is not far off. There is a world national basketball championship, and a world national baseball championship, and the US has not done all that well at these. But the Baseball World Series is actually a club series rather than a national series, so it can still stand. The US (Ice) Hockey team too isn't currently the world champs, and has been getting beat up by the Canadians the last few times. At the Salt Lake 2002 Olympics, the Canadians won both the mens' and womens' Ice Hockey golds. US womens' soccer is right at the top, though mens' isn't.

this was the best super bowl in a very long time. it was gr8 to see Giants defense unleash on hapless Brady and Giants. But Eli Manning got lucky i think. It was destiny. There is no other explanation for this.
The 45 yarder to Tyree after a near sack was the turning point and the highlight. it was awesome.
