sj merc news: silicon valley takes off on alternative energy

mar 5th, 2007

this is great news. if the boffins put their collective minds to it, it's going to be 'bye-bye, oil!'

and good riddance too.

i suspect there is enough solar and other clean tech on the shelf today that we could put a serious dent in oil demand today. however, it is not in the strategic interests of the yanks to make this stuff available to all and sundry, especially as solar would make india and other tropical nations immediate energy superpowers. (much like thorium fast breeder tech would also help india.)

liquefied coal, hydrogen fuel cells, biodiesel etc to run cars; solar to run homes; clean coal to run big power stations. i still don't see a market niche for nuclear power in all this.
