Rajeev,

Perhaps you are aware of this. If not, I'm sure you would be interested in
it.

While reading the Pakistani newspaper Dawn on the web, I came across a
very brief editorial that urged the Pakistani authorities to not
interefere with the traditions and lives of Kalasha people who live in the
Kalasha and Chitral valley in north-western Pakistan. Since the name
sounded similar to Sanskrit 'Kalash', I did some quick research. On
Wikipedia I founjd a full article on these so called Kalasha people.
Here's the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalash .

These people claim descendance from the Greek invaders of 3rd, 2nd and 1st
century BC. The photos in that article leave no doubt that they have a
fair amount of Caucasian blood in them.

You will also notice some other very curious facts in that article. It
seems the god they worship is 'Mahadev'. They conduct a spring festival
called 'Joshi Festival' which is a ten day event (somewhat similar to our
Navratri – although quite different in significance). Their women are sent
to 'Bashaleni' (seems to be some sort of 'Shala' - as in hall) when
menstruating. Their deity representing family is Jeshtak.

On the whole, it seems like it is an ancient Hindu population isolated in
time and place.

I thought your blog would be the right place to publish this. Hopefully it
would result in more information emerging.

Sagar
