SABHA - 4M Report Arvind Kumar, 08 Mar 2007

Your regular dose of pseudosecularism

  1. Sunil Gangopadhyay loses out on Oscar

Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay was deprived of an Oscar when the German film, Das Leber Der Anderen, won the Oscar for the best foreign language film.

Deepa Mehta, whose screenplay for her film Water was "inspired" by a book written by Sunil Gangopadhyay, made it to the list of famous plagiarists at famousplagiarists.com.

  2. Malay swapped as baby says he is not Muslim

A Malaysian who was swapped as a baby and raised by Muslim parents now wants to convert to Buddhism, the religion of his biological parents.
Zulhaidi, a sales executive raised in an ethnic Malay Muslim family, said he was revealing his story only now because he wants to take a Chinese name and change his religion to Buddhism. About 20 percent of the Malaysian population is Buddhist.
Meanwhile, the other half of this baby-swap too doesn't want to belong to Islam.
The Malay boy that the Teo family brought home because of the mix-up was raised as Tian Fa, and is now married to a Chinese woman, according to The Star. Tian Fa told the newspaper he has no intention of looking for his biological family and is happy to treat Teo and his wife, Lim Sai Hak, as his parents.

  3. Idi Amin was a good man: Columbia University Professor

We learn from Mahmood Mamdani, a Muslim, a Columbia University Profesor and the husband of the filmmaker Mira Nair, that the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin who persecuted Hindus was actually a nice guy.

According to the actor Forest Whitaker:

'I spoke to an East Indian man, a scholar -- (filmmaker) Mira Nair's husband,' Whitaker said, referring to Mahmood Mamdani, the Herbert Lehman professor of government in the anthropology and political science departments at New York's Columbia University. 'He is a third-generation Ugandan and he had amazingly positive things to say about Idi Amin. He said Amin helped the country immensely. That was confusing for me, because Amin did kick the Asians out of Uganda. He gave them 90 days.

  4. Communist phone bill is $25 a day for non-usage of phones!

According to The Times of India, the Naxalite supporter Sandeep Pandey has claimed that he does not need a cell phone for himself as he has no time for his family.

Earlier, Pandey had demanded Rs. 50,000 towards his phone bill for the duration of 50 days. That comes to Rs. 1000 (roughly $25) a day, an amount more than the monthly telephone bill that many Americans pay.

Sandeep Pandey does not have much time to speak on the telephone, but how much time does he have? We did a quick calculation. Since he requires 1000 rupees every day just to cover his phone bill, and it costs around 2 rupees a minute to use a cell phone while travelling, it follows that he spends 500 minutes (8 hours and 20 minutes) of his waking time chatting on the telephone.

  5. Uttar Pradesh Governor chased away from Sanskrit University

The students of a Sanskrit University chased away the Governor of Uttar Pradesh who claimed that those who learnt Sanskrit lived in the bullock cart age. According to the Governor, the way to succeed in the country where he formed the ruling class was to escape the ruling class and go abroad!
"If you want to succeed professionally, earn Rs 2-3 lakh a month or go abroad... you must be proficient in English. If you only learn Sanskrit, you will remain cut off from the rest of the world and continue to live in the bullock-cart age."

This was the trigger: about 50-odd students sprang to their feet shouting "Governor, go back". Soon, paper and cloth missiles and stones were being thrown at him.
    . . .
His voice couldn't be heard in the din and as chairs began to be hurled, the securitymen decided it was time for the governor to beat a retreat. The speech was taken as read, the national anthem was played, and the governor rushed out into his car.

The students chased his convoy and pelted it with stones.

This is what the Superintendent of Police had to say:
I don't know what provoked the violence.

  6. Richard Sproat and his little Supercomputer

Richard Sproat of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign used his little supercomputer and "proved" that the Harappan script was no script at all, but merely a collection of picture signs conveying messages visually but not linguistically.

Kalavai Venkat writes in and asks how something that is merely a collection of pictures is repeatedly seen to be inscribed from right to left.

We suggest that Kalavai Venkat not argue with us, but take take up the challenge to prove that Richard Sproat is an idiot. The rules of the challenge have been described by IRFAN.

    Ground Rules for challenge:
    1. You cannot forge manuscripts
    2. If you prove them to be idiots, you will be accused of forgery.
    3. All arbitrations will be settled only by recognized Indus researchers comprising of Farmer, Witzel, Southworth and Sproat.
