re san's comment about this movie, i saw the trailer and thought it rather bizarre. sort of like the movie version of a video game. i like the *idea* of thermopylae, that a determined small group can overcome great odds. much like what swami vivekananda said: give me a 100 committed young men, and i can turn things around.
see what someone sent me about the accuracy or otherwise of the film historically. i am not sure about the *reality* of thermopylae.
it's a point of pride for persians that they are not arabs, and not brown or black. they think of themselves as the original white 'aryans' whatever that means. also, i think persian women were coveted by many: i recall the economist talking about how the arab mohammedans were keen on converting persians, certainly with the idea of 'fair-skinned persian women' [sic, verbatim] becoming available to them being a motivating factor.
