iphone 4 a wet blanket but tablets good

jun 8th, 2010

disappointed in this event and the announcements.

i think apple has peaked. sad to say it as i am a big admirer of jobs. but they have nowhere to go but down. they are seeing the big shadow of android behind them, even as they celebrate the success of the ipad. (i gotta get myself one of these puppies, although i have resisted the iphone, being a nokia fan. i think i'll buy a nokia c6 or x6 or e72 to replace my aging but trusty e62 -- any suggestions.)

i like the ipad idea because it boots up instantly and doesn't bloat up with garbage, and slow down over time, like my netbook does. i bought this nice XP netbook in sept, and it used to boot up from hiberate very quickly, but now it's down to an agonizing 2 min wait while i twiddle my thumbs.

also, with a keyboard dock, the ipad would suffice for most of what i do -- browsing and writing text. of course i'd keep a couple of laptops around (no resale value anyway).

i am also planning to buy an ipod touch. want the 32 gb model, any good deals? i was hoping there'd be a new ipod touch 4 with iphone 4, so that the older ipod touch would come down in price. no such luck.

just got a Samsung bada based phone. Must say beats iPhone 4G in almost all areas, and the display to be seen to be believed.
One thing about Apple that is hugely irritating is that their iPhones don't even have some of the basic things which are taken for granted these days e.g. fm radio, memory card slot. Only thing that is keeping iPhone going is Apps, and deft marketing. Others are desperately trying to immitate that and someone is going to succeed. Apple surely has peaked.

rajeev,

I would recommend samsung wave (S8500). It seems to be the currently best price/performance bargain. I got mine for 329 (in Eurabian currency), though locked to a local network.

All high-end smart coming this quarter of year have all most all same specification, Apple say iPhone4 is not as fast as iphone 3GS. In-turn android phones (at present running on 1Ghz) with latest Android 2.2 update will be 3-4 times faster in speed.

Some them you could wait for are HTC Desire, HTC Legend and Samsung Galaxy S and Motorola's up coming phones.

You might have been Nokia fan, if you got to play around top Android Games and Application you will find new generation of phones after Nokia.

On Pads, by end of year you would find numerous Pad devices running android.

Rajeev,
Ditch XP and try ubuntu. Its one of the best OS out there which can give windows 7 a run for its money.

there's a horde of Android-based tablets that will be coming out before yearend, and they will eclipse iPad, and even iPhone

I'm just wondering why Microsoft has been asleep all this time.

thanks guys for suggestions. my current thinking is -- ipod touch to access all the apple application. wait for good android tablet. but i will probably stick with nokia for the phone -- i am used to the user interface and like mail and maps.

sriram, i am an old unix guy, used to do internals, but i don't want to mess with make and grep and other such stuff any more :-) although i understand i can get ubuntu on a 2gb thumb drive and use it as an alternate boot drive.

If you are very particular about Nokia, wait for N8 with S^3 OS. If you are slightly flexible go for Mot Droid Extreme etc. You will like the new interface. Not like the old Mot phones..

Abt IPad, I do not think you have any alternate right now, although there are a slew of touch based pads to be released over this year & next.
