jun 25th, 2010

bad news indeed. NYT and wapo spell out obama's intent -- cut and run, leaving afghanistan to the ISI.

oh joy! chidambaram can expect whoops to be breaking out all around while he's in pak. they have won: pakistan has defeated america.

or perhaps china, via its proxy pakistan, has defeated america.

The last American helicopter out of Kabul

General Stanley McChrystal was barely out the door when the Obama administration gave the nod to America's two most influential newspapers that it was time to start telling the truth to the American public about the Afghanistan War.

The Washington Post chimed in today:
... The State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, which have quadrupled the number of civilians in Afghanistan in the past year, are still not confident of civilian capabilities. The Afghan government clearly cannot carry the burden.

So the administration is looking for a decent, negotiated exit. The Pakistani intelligence service would act as a surrogate (and guarantor) for the Taliban, as Slobodan Milosevic did for the Bosnian Serbs 15 years ago. The Americans would deliver Kabul. The deal might leave the Taliban in control of large parts of Afghanistan but keep al-Qaeda in Pakistan, where Islamabad would agree to deal harshly with its fighters.

The question now it seems is :

1. Will the ISI progeny treat NATO/Obama toops like the treated USA troops in Mogadishu /

2. Or, will the treatment be similar to what Nazeebullah enjoyed..

I am wondering how many actual wars USA has won since WW II.
The yanks certainly did not win in Korea, in Vietnam. Iraq, and Afghanistan are draining USA out.

Victories against small time nuts like Serbia or Grenada do not count for a superpower.

I don't see what would guarantee that Pak would keep its word - we all know their preference for treachery. I think that as soon as Pak regained control over Afghanistan, it would go back to its bad old ways of fomenting jihadism in order to keep control. The Tajiks, Uzbeks and Hazaras of Northern Afghanistan won't agree to live under Pashtun/Taliban domination. How will the US deliver them?

How will the other neighboring powers react to a US-Pak deal? Russia and Iran will certainly want to have a say.

What would happen to Indo-US strategic cooperation if Pak uses its new position in Afghanistan to reinforce militancy in Kashmir?
