wsj: a dangerous belief that all religions are the same

apr 23rd, 2010

see the quotes. it is only idiot hindus who claim all religions are the same. they are not. some are better (much better) than others (hint: eastern, forest religions are much better than arab, desert religions).

this can be added to several other stupid beliefs in india:

1. we go to the olympics to be part of the scenery ie. "to participate is the thing, not to win"
2. cricket is not fixed and is better than the world wrestling federation
3. 'saint' thomas came to india (hard to do, unless he had two skeletons. his skeleton is in ortona, italy. his other skeleton is in chennai, india)
4. jesus came to india (hard to do, as jesus did not exist)
5. hindus wiped out buddhism in india (no, it was mohammedans who literally beheaded all the monks and burned all their monasteries)
6. nehru brought india its independence
7. the nehru dynasty has sacrificed a lot for india
8. mohammedans are a poor, woebegone oppressed group in india (no, they flex their muscles and oppress hindus)
9. communism and socialism are good for the oppressed (no, their objective is to *keep* the oppressed oppressed)
10. poverty is somehow dignified (no, it's not. otherwfse rich white people would be dying to become poor. i don't see any of them giving their money away and becoming wandering penniless mendicants).

Excellent post!
Always a pleasure to read your blog.
The std response regarding Swami Vivekananda and the World Congress of Religions is just too obvious. But, it is clear from the struggle of the last 3 Hindu acharyas, that establishing one's stand (based on the Vedic scriptures)and countering point-by-point the stand of the heterodox religions was the accepted norm; that is, the differences were clearly established. Therefore, the same applies to the correct Hindu response to the Abrahamic religions also. Swami Dayanand Saraswati (Arya Samaj) was absolutely clear as to the differences. But, it appears that Swami Vivekananda, Paramahamsa Yogananda and some latter day sadhus seem to have modified this stand for achieving a rapport with Western audiences. Others have picked up the cue WITHOUT knowing this critical reason, and therein lies a long story.

generalization of all religions as eqaul is something I get to hear everyday from atheists, communists to secularists. The common thinking among all these people that all these religions are all equal. And they are all equally bad. These people believe that there cannot exist any peaceful good religion.

Does that mean that such people are peaceful and are people of really good character? I don’t think so. I will explain to you why. I have very good reason to believe that people who consider all religions to be equal and
religion itself to be bad are as much bigots as the Islamic terrorists killing people everywhere.

Generally speaking people in our world can be divided into 3 groups.

1. Believers in "One-Godism": This would be people having faith in the Christian God or Allah within Islam. This group believes that their God is the only true God and their path is the only path to truth.

2. Believers in "No-Godism": These are our Atheists. They believe in no God. They believe all religions are equally bad. They feel their beliefs are superior and feel morally justified in lecturing to believers in any God, even if the believers happen to belong to truly peace loving tolerant faiths.

3. Believers in Many Gods and Paths to truth: Believers in multiple paths to truth are more tolerant to other beliefs and faiths. Believers of such faiths are mostly in Asia. Examples of such faiths would be Hinduism, Jainism, Shintoism of Japan, Taoism and Confusionism and the now-extinct pre-christian religion of europe. There is no hate directed towards any
community or people by this group.

Let us examine the primary beliefs of the intolerant among the above groups of people.

A: One-Godism: The world would be peaceful only if every one in the world believed in one God, and only in the God I believe in. There cannot be peace in the planet until everybody realized that every other religion is bad.

B: No-Godism: The world would be a better place only if everyone in the world stopped believing in any God. There cannot be peace in the world until everybody realizes that every religion is bad. They are in effect saying that everybody who does not agree with them on religion is a hindrance to peace who must be challenged and overcome.

From the above lines, we can deduce:

No-Godism = One-Godism.

Followers of No-Godism really are not any less intolerant than the most intolerant semitic faith(which include Christianity + Islam + Judaism).

India is currently ruled by secularists, many of whom consider themselves atheists. We know people such as Karunanidhi, Chidambaram, Mahesh Bhatt,
Maoists, Communists, socialists, among many others consider themselves atheists.

Atheism is really an ideology. This ideology is alien to India and does not fit with the tolerant beliefs within India. The sooner this intolerant ideology is thrown out of India, the better off we will be as a country.
