dear swapan, your pioneer article re EVMs is unseemly

aug 9th, 2009

for someone who is usually the epitome of thoughtfulness and insight, i'm afraid you made a faux pas with this article.

here's what i tweeted:

this dig by you re EVMs
merely shows you don't understand the technology. EVMs can be fixed if EC is pushed

the EVM process is fundamentally flawed as it stands, and it can be fixed. but not if the EC is allowed to stonewall and get away with it. those who have dealt with computers in a technical manner are extremely sceptical of them, and with good reason: lay persons have a touching faith in computers, but they are easily messed with.

there is a systemic problem which can be fixed. to begin with the EVMs must put out a printed receipt, that is the minimum. the real issue is that there is no audit trail at the moment.

several people have written thoughtful essays about this topic. here is a link to what i wrote -- EVMs around the world have been discredited because of the ease with which they are tampered with. i hope you will read this, as i have attempted to capture the state of the art as of june 2009. having worked on computer security and operating systems as a software engineer, i do have some inside information about this topic. http://rajeev2007.wordpress.com/2009/07/03/can-evms-subvert-elections-full-post/

there are other unanswered and subtle questions raised for instance by dr subramaniam swamy, professor monu nalapat, dr kalyan, and senthil raja.

yes, a bunch of southies, but doddering pensioners? they, and yours truly, must protest most vigorously.

thanks
rajeev

I lost faith in swapan das gupta after reading his blog on hindutva.. I have long commented in his blog, that he do not want to risk his career, or may be he want to improve his career, just by diluting his stand on ideology, (even If not completely switch over)..

B/w his pioneer article seems to be "I know everything" kinda stuff.. He easily rubbishes the shastry's death in russia, while the official correspondence b/w the two nations is still kept secret..

Similarly, the death of Nethaji is also a mystery, and the archivals about his is also either deleted or kept in secret..

Ofcourse, he never wants to answer why those official documents are still kept in secret, if there is no conspiracy..

Swapan sees a very good market among the ignorant middle classes, and hence he is toing their line of "Everything happening in this world is genuine, noble.".
