For some reason, the govt has decided to radically cut funding for India's nuclear program -- by 1,333 Crore no less! Gee, as if we don't know why (*cough*123*cough*cough*).
The budget for the thorium plant in Mumbai has been cut by Rs. 2 Crores.
Most likely, that money will be spent on growing the US nuclear power industry. Gee, better check their stock prices, after this announcement. Meanwhile, the Congress will pocket any difference and spend it on vote-banks. They have to think about security, you know -- theirs, not ours.

Strangely, today I read a news item in Times of India

in which former President Kalam had said the following:
“Maintaining his strong support for the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Kalam said India has to go in for nuclear energy in a big way to meet its fast growing developmental needs.
He said as a scientist, he must support the deal as India lacks uranium resources, while simultaneously calling for intensive research to use thorium as nuclear fuel.
Noting that India has abundance of thorium, he said it is essential that it carries out an intensive research to use the non-fissile material for maximizing its utilisation and generating power. But he said it would take 5 to 10 years for research to fructify and hence he supported the nuclear deal.”
