What might hold back India?

By Karishma Vaswani
BBC Mumbai business correspondent

On any given day, at the Registrar of Companies in Mumbai, at least 50 men carrying stacks of documents brave the unforgiving Indian sun.

They queue for hours to push through the necessary paperwork to open a business in India.

Many of them will have to come back repeatedly, if the countless forms they have been given by the comfortable officials in air conditioned offices have not been properly filled out. But it is a necessary evil.

You cannot open a business in Mumbai without getting the right papers stamped, marked and approved at this office.

More apologia's from the Rags of India on the Hindu progeny of Ali Akbar Khan affair; now it is George Bush's fault that a sitar player in India says he is not Muslim! Truly 'Useful Idiots'

I am really looking forward to the next Friday Jumma when a Fatwaa is issued against Mr Khan's son for apostasy. Wonder which "original sin" will be blamed then; one thing I am sure of - there will be editorials to the effect that "New Delhi must make sure not to react to Imam Bukhari's Fatwaa and stay out of the whole affair, which can best be described as a family affair"
What a bunch of eunuchs!

I love how the BBC manages to slip the word "hungry" in India-related articles.

"hungry Indian shoppers flocked to the opening to spend their growing incomes on foreign goods"

or "energy-hungry India"

How about contractors not getting their due from clients? I have heard that even top companies like R have a notorious reputation for not paying the contractors. Does that not hold India back? Has anyone made a survey of small businesses ruined because of accumulated dues?

Also, banks working to kill the businesses rather than supporting them!..

Shahryar, I think if she left it at "curious Indian shoppers", I suppose my discontentment would be reduced.
