strange things in the tech world

sep 8th, 2006

hewlett packard's board-room shenanigans have tarnished its long-held image of being a particularly benevolent company with a strong corporate culture. i am disappointed because i have long admired the firm as an innovator, a survivor and an ethical company.

sony is delaying the launch of the playstation. yet again. good news for microsoft xbox. bad news for sony's image, already hammered by the exploding battery problem.

kleiner perkins' john doerr leaves the sun microsystems board after 24 years. i doubt if this is good news for the company, which has been struggling recently anyway.

Enough with the "don't let the Doerr hit you on the way out" jokes, already! John Doerr, a general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, one of Silicon Valley's best-known venture capital firms, is giving up his directorship at Sun, a position he has held since the company was founded in 1982. While the circumstances surrounding certain other boardroom departures might lead one to wonder if similar contretemps inspired Doerr to leave a company he helped launch, the VC says it was nothing of the sort. "I resigned for more time with family. The kids grow so fast," Doerr told News.com . "Sun's in great shape: revenue momentum building, hot new products, a terrific management team and a strong board of directors."
