a bad idea to mess with rivers

sept 19, 2006

this is why i am concerned about the consequences of large-scale shifting of the hydrological environment.

the army corps of engineers did this in the florida everglades, causing serious havoc.
the soviets built the aswan dam, causing the nile's silt to back up behind the dam, just like it's going to these 'birds-foot' islands in the mississippi delta, going to unwanted places.

It is the worst and arrogant idea, especially when a group of intellectuals in country spread such ideas, propagandas are created to convince people about benifits, then we get a company to use the massive machines to do something as massive whose effect is unknown.

The mention of massive organization as above because, if somebody's house is being destroyed, he may decide to poke around with the eco system, and nothing much can be done about such cases. But individual efforts, unless highly mechanized, can't make big disturbances.

I know of one area which used to be flooded by a river. Canals were constructed beside the river, and it was such a safety for a generation or more. The side effects are being known gradually. It has blocked the natural drainage system, so the crops are highly suspectible. Land too close to river has been used without worrying vagaries of the river, but that kind of reduced the importance and the quality of the river- the flow pattern/deapth might have changed to the detriment of the river- the latter is my guess.

It was an extremely benign effort, with immediate impact, it was supposed to be so much helpful, but even then it was not perfect.
