Smaller towns are seen as swinging towards the opposition BJP and its leader Narendra Modi:

My question is - has Modi and BJP's campaign caught support all the way at the village level? I ask this because Congress has obviously been counting on being able to win the rural vote through NREGA, Food Security Bill, and other similar populist measures aimed at the rural poor. Even if BJP and Modi are polling well in the cities and attracting large attendance at their rallies, it doesn't necessarily mean that the Congress won't surprise everyone by grabbing a substantial chunk of that rural vote through their vote-buying schemes. I think that Modi and BJP need to increasingly devote more attention to wooing rural voters in particular, and not take them for granted. Otherwise, they risk overestimating their own strength and being blind-sided by the Congress. Too much is riding on this election for them to fail.
