I know something happened in the early 2000s, think it was 2002, when both Rajeev Srinivasan, and Varsha Bhosle, disappeared from Rediff for a while. Varsha never really returned, while Rajeev wrote in fits and starts, and ultimately abandoned rediff for this blog.

nothing really happened to me re rediff. in fact after 2002 gujarat riots i wrote strong pieces supporting modi. but varsha dropped off around 2005, i think, and i found that rediff was downplaying its commentary. i moved on to others like DNA, pioneer, new indian express, and later firstpost.com. i still write now and then for rediff, just not consistently. (just wrote something on the ISRO case). i have to say i continue to have the highest regard for nikhil lakshman as a wonderful editor. he took large personal risks when he allowed varsha, me, arvind lavakare, claude arpi et al to say things that i am sure the establishment was not happy about.
